Installation

Difficulty
Easy
Tools
Existing paired card key for the touchscreen route; supported owner Tesla app route where available
  1. Park the vehicle and keep an existing working key available. In the touchscreen, open Controls > Locks > Keys > Add Key, following the actual vehicle prompts.
  2. Present the new NFC credential at the console reader specified for the vehicle. Older console instructions locate it behind the cup holders; current Highland and Juniper instructions locate it on the wireless-phone charger area.
  3. When prompted on the touchscreen route, scan an already paired card key or key fob to authorise addition. A supported owner app may provide its own Add Key Card procedure; follow that route if applicable.
  4. Once paired, the new credential appears in the vehicle key list and works as a card key for locking, unlocking and in-car authentication.

Good to Know

Caution
  • Use this credential only with a vehicle you own or are authorised to access. It is paired through the vehicle key-management procedure.
  • Pairing the new key requires an existing working key.
  • The reader location varies by console generation. Not every Model 3 or Model Y reads the key behind the cup holders.
  • This is an NFC key-card credential, with no remote-button or passive key-fob functions. Lock the vehicle explicitly under its card-key instructions and keep the key with you.
Care
  • Keep the housing clean with a soft, dry cloth and avoid damaging or opening the enclosed electronics.
  • Keep the key with you and manage its vehicle key-list entry if it is lost or no longer authorised for use.
